Welcome aboard! Before you head out, take a look at these friendly boat safety tips. And when you’re ready, we can help you compare boat insurance quotes too—so you can feel confident on the water. 🚤😊

1) Always wear a life jacket

  • Wear properly fitted, Coast Guard–approved life jackets at all times.

  • Make sure children wear life jackets too—don’t assume they’ll be okay.

2) Check the weather before you go

  • Review forecasts and local marine warnings.

  • Avoid heading out if storms, high winds, or poor visibility are expected.

3) File a float plan (and follow it)

  • Let someone know where you’re going, when you’ll return, and who’s onboard.

  • If you change plans, update your contact.

4) Do a pre-departure inspection

  • Check fuel, oil (as applicable), battery, bilge pump operation, and navigation lights.

  • Confirm drain plugs are in place and hatches/vents are secured.

5) Maintain safe speed

  • Slow down in crowded areas, near docks, and in low-visibility conditions.

  • Reduce speed when crossing wakes to prevent accidents and swamping.

6) Watch for people in the water

  • Keep a sharp lookout for swimmers, divers, and paddle craft.

  • Be extra cautious near shoreline, marinas, and beach areas.

7) Know and follow navigation rules

  • Use proper right-of-way practices.

  • Stay alert for buoys, channels, no-wake zones, and restricted areas.

8) Keep a proper safety kit onboard

Consider carrying:

  • First-aid kit

  • Fire extinguisher (required in many areas)

  • Flashlights/headlamps and spare batteries

  • Emergency signaling devices (flares or equivalents where legal)

  • Throw rope/flotation device

Stay safe out there—and make sure you’re covered, too. Reach out to us for a boat insurance quote. We’ll be glad to help! 🌊📞
